Spring water is nothing but natural underground water which emerges from the aquifer to flow out through the surface of the Earth in the form of springs. At times water from these springs gets collected in their place of origin, thereby forming freshwater lakes while at other times they may flow out in the form of streams. However, since this is underground water, it contains many dissolved minerals many of which play significant roles in our lives.

Thus spring water as it comes out of the Earth is not safe for drinking purposes.

But spring water can be made safe and healthy for drinking by collecting the spring water from lakes and streams and then passing them through a series of steps for purification. However, when drinking fresh spring water, care must be taken to ensure that the water is allowed to settle for some time so that immiscible impurities can settle at the bottom and the almost pure water can be siphoned off from the top.

The TDS of the spring water also plays a vital role in determining its safety. TDS or the total dissolved salt is the total of all the minerals salts that are present in water from springs, taps, filters, etc. The higher the TDS, the less safe it is to drink the water. This TDS can be measured with the help of a TDS measurer which is small enough to be carried without any hassle. This device can be used to instantly measure the amount of the total dissolved salt in the water present thereby enabling a person to determine whether it is safe for drinking.

However, if spring water is available on taps, it would contain the same amount of contaminants that would be present in tap water. These contaminants come into the water from the water pipes used in its transportation. Thus this water needs to be further filtered using either an activated carbon filter, a reverse osmosis filter, UV filter, etc. This will make the water safe for drinking and sweet to taste.
